(Desert Research Institute) The Desert Research Institute has entered into agreement with Magee Scientific of Berkeley, California, and its European partner company Aerosol of Ljubljana, Slovenia, to manufacture and market the new DRI Model 2015 Multiwavelength Laboratory Carbon Analyzer. Developed by atmospheric scientists at DRI, the instrument provides advanced analysis of Black Carbon aerosol particles found in the atmosphere. Additionally, the instrument allows scientists and laboratory technicians to quantify Brown Carbon as part of aerosol sample analysis. |

(Wayne State University - Office of the Vice President for Research) A research team led by Kezhong Zhang, Ph.D., at the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, has discovered that exposure to air pollution has a direct adverse health effect on the liver and causes liver fibrosis, an illness associated with metabolic disease and liver cancer. |
WSU scientists discover mechanism for air pollution-induced liver disease |
(Harvard University) Researchers have for the first time has described in detail how termite mounds are ventilated. The study reveals that the structures act akin to a lung, inhaling and exhaling once a day as they are heated and cooled. |

(The Genome Analysis Centre) Scientists at TGAC, alongside European partners, have created a cutting-edge, open source community for the lifesciences. BioJavaScript (BioJS) is a free, accessible software library that develops visualization tools for different types of biological data. Data visualization allows researchers to present their data to communicate key scientific hypotheses and concepts to a wider audience. Helping us to understand complex biological systems in relation to improving plant, animal and human health. |

(University of Massachusetts at Amherst) Polymer scientist Kenneth Carter, who co-directs the program with colleague Gregory Tew, says the NRT will engage 74 students over five years in polymer science and engineering, immunology, food science and several engineering fields. One goal is to explore new models for graduate education. |

(Oxford University Press) School age children who are born prematurely are more likely to have low mathematical achievement, thought to be associated with reduced working memory and number skills, according to a new study published today in the neurology journal Brain. |
The risk of cognitive impairment in children born prematurely may be predicted using MRI after birth |
(Arizona State University) Bacteria's ability to become resistant to antibiotics is a growing issue in health care: Resistant strains result in prolonged illnesses and higher mortality rates. One way to combat this is to determine bacteria's antibiotic resistance in a given patient, but that often takes days -- and time is crucial in treatment. ASU scientists have developed a technique that can sort antibiotic-resistant from 'susceptible' bacteria, and it happens in a matter of minutes. |

(Association for Psychological Science) People who are born premature tend to accumulate less wealth as adults, and a new study suggests that this may be due to lower mathematics abilities. The findings, published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, show that preterm birth is associated with lower academic abilities in childhood, and lower educational attainment and less wealth in adulthood. |

(Michigan State University) The simple parenting strategy of helping toddlers understand emotion may reduce behavioral problems later on, finds a federally funded study led by a Michigan State University researcher. |

(University of Alberta) The University of Alberta Faculty of Science continues its leadership in the field of digital learning with the launch of its first electronic textbook this fall. Available as an app through iTunes and Google Play, the textbook is based on the content from the U of A's extremely successful Dino 101 Massive Open Online Course, an introduction to dinosaur paleobiology. |

(Texas A&M University) Scientists have pinpointed a population of neurons in the brain that influences whether one drink leads to two, which could ultimately lead to a cure for alcoholism and other addictions. A study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience by researchers at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, finds that alcohol consumption alters the structure and function of neurons in the dorsomedial striatum, a part of the brain known to be important in goal-driven behaviors |

(National Science Foundation) Building sustainable fisheries, monitoring landslide risk, studying the emerging bioeconomy: these are some of the research projects announced today in the newest round of an interagency partnership to foster collaborative global research. |

(American Chemical Society) Gum disease is a common condition among adults that occurs when bacteria form biofilms or plaques on teeth, and consequently the gums become inflamed. Some severe cases, called periodontitis, call for antibiotics. But now scientists have discovered that wild blueberry extract could help prevent dental plaque formation. Their report in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry could lead to a new therapy for periodontitis and a reduced need for antibiotics. |

(American Chemical Society) A new study of more than 300 women suggests that exposure to certain phthalates -- substances commonly used in food packaging, personal-care and other everyday products -- could be associated with miscarriage, mostly between 5 and 13 weeks of pregnancy. The research, appearing in the ACS journal Environmental Science &Technology, is the first epidemiological study on non-work-related exposure to phthalates to provide evidence for the possible link among a general population. |
Exposure to phthalates could be linked to pregnancy loss |
(American Sociological Association) Social scientists have long argued documentary films are powerful tools for social change. But a University of Iowa (UI) sociologist and his co-researchers are the first to use the Internet and social media to systematically show how a documentary film reshaped public perception and ultimately led to municipal bans on hydraulic fracking. |
